Drs Robert Baird, Robert Fassina and Justin Munt launch Robotic Joint Replacement Surgery at Burnside Hospital
We are pleased to announce, that in conjunction with Burnside Hospital, Drs Baird, Fassina and Munt are the only surgeons in South Australia to be using Robotic Arm Technology (Stryker Mako RIO TM) to perform joint replacement surgery (Makoplasty)

Its a real honour to feature on the front page of the Summer Edition of the Burnside Bulletin! http://www.burnsidehospital.asn.au/pdfs/BURNSIDE_BULLETIN_DEC15.pdf

We are pleased to announce, that in conjunction with Burnside Hospital, Drs Baird, Fassina and Munt are the only surgeons in South Australia to be using Robotic Arm Technology (Stryker Mako RIO TM) to perform joint replacement surgery (Makoplasty).

After careful consideration and research into the field of Robotic Assisted Joint Replacement Surgery we realised that there are many systems available that can provide assistance.  A thorough review of the literature, training on various commercially available machines and visitations to centres in Australia and the USA resulted in us deciding to utilise the Stryker MAKO (TM) robotic system. It is the only commercially available robot that offers partial knee, total hip and total knee replacement platforms.  It also allows for minimally invasive surgery to be performed in these regions.

The Stryker Mako (TM) Robot has the strongest evidence supporting its use in joint replacement surgery. Over 60,000 implanted partial knee replacements have been performed using the MAKO robot and when compared to conventional techniques, the evidence available demonstrates:

  • less post operative pain
  • quicker return to normal function
  • improved implant positioning
  • reduced revision rates

We are excited that the CEO and the Board of Burnside Hospital have embraced this innovative technology and are enabling us to offer this treatment option to appropriate patients.

If you would like further information on Robotic Assisted Joint Replacement Surgery or would like to request an appointment with one of our doctors performing this advanced technique, please contact us at orthorobotics@aots.net.au or call on (08) 7325 4800.
